Youtube didn’t like my IP; so after a lot of fighting; I just torified that shit and it worked

They forked youtube-dl a while back, and managed to make it to actually download fast. Uses the same command line arguments, so it's a seamless switch.
@alyx hopefully they found a way to get around YT dumping connections :/

Only place I've found it failing is if a video was marked 18+.
