As I explained to my coworker. They refuse to admit they lived in mud huts so they claim the most insane bullshit to avoid the truth.

I'm pretty sure my ancestors lived in houses made from mud and straws not that long ago. Doesn't bother me. I don't understand why it would be taboo.
Because they don't want to acknowledge the fact that bring brought to America in chains actually worked out well for them.
Also another big factor is that your people are no longer in mud huts. The cousins of the African Americans still in Africa still live in huts.

400 years is probably an exaggeration, even for Turks, but as far as I can tell, modern culture wasn't developed in here, but rather imported. So it came into cities at first, obviously, and it was much too slow to trickle into rural areas.
Add to that Romania's particular context, of being under constant occupation and control for hundreds of years, only for communism to hit when we were finally allowed to do as we pleased.
I don't think until now we were ever in a stable enough situation so that the rural parts could catch up to the urban areas.
Seems to be a trend in Europe. I recall a Turkish friend telling me of a village that was 400 years behind the times.
