I'm not sure "throwing the book" works anymore for things that are obviously bullshit in the first place.
"Throwing the book" only works when the law you're enforcing is justified. When the law is abusive from the start, you're gonna start getting public outrage.

@Terry @alyx They want a plea deal that will ruin the kids' lives, it's a standard tactic. Charge them with shit that will put them in prison forever, and then say "well if plead guilty to this much lesser felony charge we'll let the rest go". The kids should absolutely take this to trial.

@Heil_Honkler @deprecated_ii @RustyCrab @Terry @alyx They don't care about the law; the kids probably don't have enough money to appeal their case all the way to the Supreme Court. Even if they're found innocent in a lower court they'll still have to pay to defend themselves and the experience with the legal system will be punishment in and of itself.

The police and local government will do everything in their power to make these kids’ lives miserable whatever the law says because they see them as their political enemies.
