Lol, that's not my understanding of the relationship between "woman" and "lady". It's just that "woman" fits anyone, including the more brash, rough, ugly, uncultured, mean, evil individuals of the female sex. Lady is only used for the most refined, intelligent and beautiful individuals. The same goes for "man" and "gentleman". It's not that "woman" or "man" are insults, it's just that you logically can't use "lady" or "gentlemen" for someone who hasn't earned the title. Something like "uncultured lady" is an oxymoron. You can only say "uncultured woman".
