>Lincoln and his brother sewed raccoon skin on a dog to "shut it up" In his own autobiography [See Edit].
What the fuck?

Edit:
This is not Lincoln's auto-biography, which were all very short and for newspapers, but Wayne Whipple's biography of Lincoln's youth:
https://www.gutenberg.org/files/22925/22925-h/22925-h.htm
Whipple was using first person in describing what others have told him, which was acceptable practice in 1908, but not now. His sources, namely Lincoln's family and friends, are still reliable. In some sense this makes Lincoln's behavior worse, as this is all we know of what he did and was caught doing. Apologies for the mistakes! Sic semper tyrannis!

In best case scenario, I can interpret this as they sewed/tied the raccoon hide like improvised clothing. Made some kind of improvised straps or belts to hold the hide onto the dog.

Worst case scenario, we're talking about literally sewing the hide onto the dog's skin. I'm inclined to not believe this option, because holly fuck, imagine the pain! I don't think the dog would have just struggled against this. It would have bitten the hell out of the kids.
But if this latter version is what actually happened, I have to ask, was Lincoln an actual sociopath?

@alyx
I considered that interpretation, but Lincoln says the dog "struggled vigorously" and it "beelined" to their home, as if in pain. Lincoln also described what he and John did as an "operation". That is not a description of a dog merely having something slipped over its mouth.
