@TheMadPirate do yourself a favor and get jojoba or coconut oil (beware that coconut oil becomes solid at 10°C!) apply it after a shower with a wet or damp beard. Depending on the amount, leave it in or gently wash it out.
If you leave near a target, there's "beard softener" that I *strongly* recommend.
