@sjw they'll freeze, you're not really supposed to go under like 60f. At least, that's what I've been told forever. I have a friend whose smart ac decided to turn on while he was at work on and when he came home the pipes were frozone

@beardalaxy water won't freeze at 45°F. Water freezes at 32°F.

@sjw not your water pipes, your ac pipes. Idk what the difference is but at every rented property I've been to they have said not to set the temp below 65 :P it'll freeze it up and put it out of commission until it gets warm again which, especially in the winter, can be difficult to deal with. Maybe it's all big energy propaganda.

@beardalaxy @sjw it can strain the system. I don’t know the science behind it but it can cause the Lines to ice up and the ac unit will stop working. If I’m not mistaken this happens as well when the Freon levels are low.

@beardalaxy freezing usually happens because coolant level is too low

The exact same technology is used in freezers

@beardalaxy also, the refrigerant freezing shouldn't damage anything. You'll just have to put up with it heat until it thaws. It won't rupture the piping. That's pretty much only a water thing.
