if there ever was a monopoly it was because nobody wanted to use anything else since none of them could even with wish to compare to steam (except maybe GoG) 
not to mention that steam since at least 2015 is investing in preventing the actual possible monopoly which is Windows/Microsoft Store by pushing linux (obviously out of self interest too).

@icedquinn @DarkMahesvara @Giganova8 they're also the only ones really trying to compete with steam it seems, they're going to be adding mod support to galaxy soon from what I hear.
@icedquinn @DarkMahesvara @Giganova8 most of the competition only wanted to make their own launcher so they wouldn't have to pay valve as much.
