Lately there's been a bit of buzz around AI/ML generated artwork.

Normally when I look at these things, I can tell rapidly whether or not they're AI generated simply by finding subtle errors. However, a few of these are actually pretty well crafted - it's hard sometimes to tell.

I ran a few of these images through some forensic tools, and I noticed something a little odd about a few: a normal anime image will have a luminance gradient which is smooth (or if it's noisy, the noise is primarily due to compression).

However, an AI generated anime image will have a luminance gradient with much more structured noise, and the noise will be dependent on what type of object there is. Attached are 5 images - the first 3 are AI generated, and the last two are hand-drawn.

@ceo_of_monoeye_dating if you put two images in front of me and said one is AI and one isn't, I'd probably be able to tell the majority of the time. There is just something particularly different about AI images, even when they don't look fucked up. This is a really cool finding.

@beardalaxy The third AI image is included for this reason. It's extremely difficult to tell just by immediate inspection, but the luminance gradient in the background is notably different.

@ceo_of_monoeye_dating yeah when i was looking at these i was like, the first two AI images i can 100% tell they are AI just by looking at them.

the third one looks really nice, but it does have a sort of uncanny vibe to it, like that's not how a human being draws digitally. it almost looks like a photograph of a real anime girl or something. like, look at the difference in the way the braids are done between that 3rd AI image and the fubuki drawing. the AI gets every strand of hair accurately whereas the artist just gets the general shape of the braid and puts some lines in there that look like hair strands.

what really tells me that it's done with AI is her right pupil though lol it's a little messed up. AI's way of creating anime eyes makes them look like watery stones, too. the right side of her nose also gets a little weird looking from the lighting eating it.

also there are no hands in the third image, AI sucks at making hands xD that's usually they dead giveaway. it's funny that it can make some really intricate hair patterns but not hands. i like the reflection in the glasses on the second one too.

@beardalaxy I agree on the eyes, but disagree on the hair and hands. Extreme attention to detail and omissions of certain objects should not be considered giveaways for AI.

The other two points that are giveaways are the irregular lace patterning and actually poor attention to detail with lighting.
@ceo_of_monoeye_dating @beardalaxy Really bad indicators, as far as I could discern, there's 4 light sources, probably more, that create highlights and shadows in places there wouldn't be if the light was uniform, like in a big room indicated in the background.
@ceo_of_monoeye_dating @beardalaxy I was gonna make a long post but just look at how her neck is shaded and if you take that as a the correct lightning, the rest of her face should have no shadows except for the one part that is hit by the light.
