am I the only one that breaks those god awful metal locking tabs off of SATA cables or do other people do that too?

@histoire the part where they lock and my fingers aren't small enough to depress them (at least not without applying lateral force to the connector) when the cables are packed edge to edge where they connect to the motherboard
if you break them off you can just tug on the cable itself and the connector pops out. only downside is, you have to be careful not to inadvertently tug on the cable while doing other things
