ROUND 1, MATCH 15 PRE-GAME ANALYSIS
15th Seed Patchouli Knowledge (Touhou) VS 18th Seed Midna (Zelda: Twilight Princess)
Tomorrow’s match will probably be the last match of round 1 that’s actually competitive, but this one could definitely be VERY interesting. While the actual Touhou pecking order of this contest has yet to be established, we do know that Patchouli is a force to be reckoned with, given how she together with her friend Remilia Scarlet *won* the Qualifier poll. Remilia already won her match against a presumably strong opponent with relative ease, and Patchy is looking to do the same. On a personal note, I’d say she boasts my favorite design out of the Touhou girls in this contest.
However, Midna is quite the wild card. She comes from a commercially successful, reasonably well-respected game that probably boasts a high play-rate among our userbase, and which well predates gaming becoming pozzed (we just saw with Ranni how much being associated with Modern Gaming can hurt a contestant). Midna is not just THE Twilight Princess Waifu, but THE standout character from that game, period. Her cheeky, mischievous personality, her phat imp ass, her overall design, and even her cute voice and gibberish language contribute to her popularity when TP first game out, and while she never did become a Smash Bros. fighter like many hoped (Smash Bros. inexplicably stopped adding new Zelda characters after Toon Link), Midna is hardly forgotten – hell, I spent a fair bit of my TotK playtime wearing her trademark helmet.
Of course, I will personally always have a hard time writing off Zelda characters simply because of my experience with GameFAQs tournaments, where Team Zelda Always Wins (almost), ESPECIALLY in 1v1 polls. Link himself has pretty much only one legitimate 1v1 loss to his name, against Cloud in 2003, and even then he was effectively sabotaged by a Wind Waker Link match pic. Now, Midna is not Link (she hasn’t even experienced any notable success in the GameFAQs character battles), but as the Zelda rep of this tournament, part of me can’t help but expect great things from her.
