I thought I would try playing Splatoon 1 on Pretendo Network because I figured it'd be neat to check out. Turns out, Pretendo Network is one of those extremely anti-piracy fan servers, requiring you to buy a Wii U, modify it, and create an account for the network on it (and people are starting to overcharge on Wii U systems because of "modding potential" for a system that most people would rather just use a PC instead of trying to mod for emulation). Only then are you allowed to dump said fan server account files with use for emulator.
The alternative is buying pretendo accounts from shady third parties who can at any point delete the account from the Wii U, thereby deactivating it. What a great ""archival"" service of Nintendo's online features.

@Iffine i think it's because they are trying to emulate the wii u servers in the same way and that might just require an actual account/dump to play. maybe in the future it can be opened up.

just a theory though, i'm not really in the market for this sort of thing so i haven't paid attention to it much.

@beardalaxy It's possible, but this is something many other server emulators have long solved. Skipping the need for the user to provide their own files, and instead having the server provide its own files from the reverse engineering process seems like it'd solve the problems. It'd probably require the user obtaining the OS files for the system, but it'd be much longer lasting than requiring the user to buy one of the few overpriced systems on the market.
