Here it is, our #BestVidyaGirlContest tournament bracket! And honestly, I think this looks pretty exciting – even in round 1 (despite seeding adjustments being focused on making the later rounds, not round 1, more competitive) I’m seeing a lot of matches I really can’t call – Ranni VS Tifa, Shantae VS A2, Fio Germi VS Neptune, Rosalina VS Lara Croft, hell arguably even Ryza VS Cynthia (Ryza VS Dawn last year was a nail biter, and Cynthia handily beat Dawn in the Bonus Match).
Already by Round 2 I’m seeing SUCH cool potential matchups – Samus VS Tifa anyone? And once we get to round 3, every single match should be a banger (Pyra VS 2B PLEASE!).
This 32-girl tournament roster on the whole is quite different from last year’s roster – fewer Meme girls (Touhous, Gacha girls, Fluffy Tails etc), more hardcore gaming girls primarily drawing strength from their in-game roles. Snubs from last year, like Zelda, Lara Croft, Cynthia and Chun-Li, have now been rectified. Some things however very much remain the same: very few nonwhite girls, very few girls from Western games, very few girls from newer games, Sony and Microsoft looking like absolute dogshit etc.
As for who I think will win? It would be foolish to bet against Samus, but she should definitely face fiercer competition this time – her hardest match last year was against Remilia, and both Cirno and Marisa outperformed the vampire girl in the Touhou Qualifiers. The Fluffy Tail Mafia is probably out for blood after Osaka stole Holo’s rightful crown, and Zelda is arguably a bigger deal among Nintendo fans than Samus is (also, she has a new game coming out soon). And of course, I myself have spent the past year stockpiling Pyra art and memes just for this tournament.
However it turns out, it should be a lot of fun! Tournament matches will take the form of daily Fediverse polls, and each one will last 24 hours. I will aim to have them begin at around 14:00 Eastern Time. The tournament begins on Monday, and we'll have one daily match, starting with Samus VS Etna. See you there!
