playing through HL2 with the commentary. The most shocking parts are how fun it is combined with how little facial animation has advanced in 20 years
I did think HL1's setting was better though. My only real complaint about HL2 is the relative lack of enemy variety.

@RustyCrab I didn't play either game until 2020. Did not like hl2 at all, hl1 is one of my all time favorites now. The only really great part of hl2 was ravenholm. Other than that, hl2 felt like a lot more of a schlocky action movie and I liked the atmosphere of hl1 so much more. I can understand why people might like hl2 a lot for sure, it's just really not my cup of tea.

@beardalaxy part of it could be a special form of nostalgia. HL2 was probably the biggest single leap in game technology ever. Things as simple and standard today as ragdoll effects had simply never been done before it and it was legitimately mind blowing to witness them.

@RustyCrab yeah, playing it much later, I didn't really care much about the physics and stuff. The game as a whole just didn't speak to me at all. HL1 is still a pretty damn unique game, but hl2 just kind of felt a little uninspired to me I guess. Could also be the other games I have played and the time period I grew up in and all that jazz affecting that feeling.

I know a lot of people love it because of the modding scene too, and its close relation to GMod. I didn't have a PC capable of playing 3D games other than crusty N64 emulation until 2015, so I never really got into any of that. I like watching videos about it because I find it interesting, but actually playing it isn't as fun.

@beardalaxy yThe thing that feels right to me still is the pacing of the game and how well tuned the interactions are. I am currently on the first Manhacks segment and I keep getting surprised by their placement (good thing). My appreciation is probably also higher listening to the commentary and them explaining all of the weird quirks they had to deal with from player feedback.
