when I think about the money I spent on rent in my 20s, money that's just gone forever, it makes me want to fucking kill someone

@deprecated_ii it's money you spent so that you could have a place to stay and be your own person. of course you don't get to keep the physical place(s) you stayed at which does really suck, but you do get to keep the experience and wisdom gained in that time, which someone who was just living at their parents house wouldn't have had. so don't feel too bitter about it (although being a little bit bitter is still part of the experience lol).

@beardalaxy I could've bought a house right out of the army with guaranteed mortgage payments for 4 years and every older adult I knew told me it was a bad idea because "you're not at that point in your life yet"

in retrospect, considering how my life played out a few years later, not buying the house was the most idiotic decision I've made in my entire life and I doubt I'll be able to top it
@deprecated_ii @beardalaxy every single bit of guidance and advice I got from my parents/family through school and uni was wrong and hurt me greatly, if I had ignored them I'd have a house and a family now

@eee @deprecated_ii some things my parents told me to do probably would have been easier for me, but i don't think they would have been right

@deprecated_ii @beardalaxy was the army covering the 4y of payments or was that coming from some payments or savings you had after?
@EnnaComa @beardalaxy VA home loan so no down payment, I had like $12k in the bank and the GI bill would've given me monthly payments to the tune of 2x the mortgage payment 9 months of the year. where I was at, there were reasonable properties for sale around $100k so we're not talking a crazy payment

I looked at a couple places I could've probably had paid off by the time I was done with school (on top of the above, I worked summers and made great money) but I just didn't have the confidence to go through with it on my own at the time
@deprecated_ii @beardalaxy yeah man that's some shit advice. Even if you ended up hating the house and moving, that's years of equity lost.
But if that's one of the biggest mistakes, you're still doing pretty damn well.
@EnnaComa @beardalaxy well I haven't ruined my life by going to prison, getting hooked on drugs, or marrying the wrong woman at any rate

nothing unrecoverable
