I think it's reasonable to be expected to know some basic information about a country that you want to spend billions of taxpayer dollars toppling.

I disagree that the questions aren't meaningful. Senators crying for war should at least be able to write a high school level essay about the country they want to go to war with. This is not an unreasonably high standard to hold our elected officials to, especially one who has called for regime change in Iran for the entirety of his political career.

It's been almost a quarter century, plus no one knows exactly how many millions of people have fled during the war (to say nothing of KIA/MIA for the Ukie army)
If I had been asked about Iran on the spot I would've said ~70-80 million, because I already knew it was much bigger than the countries involved in any of our prior sand wars. Cruz didn't even have the confidence to ballpark it like that.
