There are tons of people whose reading ability is permanently fucked because schools will do anything to avoid teaching phonics.

@Rocket my roommate is 20. he loves reading, but apparently when he reads he doesn't actually READ he like... absorbs the text. he fully understands what's going on but on a pretty consistent basis, i say words he doesn't know the definition for. that, and words he can't say so i have to break it down into chunks for him so he can pronounce the word. it feels like talking to a kindergartner sometimes.
@beardalaxy @Rocket I was taught phonics but I read word at a time because it’s easier with my dyslexia so if I assume a word I can sound like a dumbass when I get it wrong
