The game industry has a lot of interesting phenomena and this is one of my favorite ones. A game comes out that almost everyone agrees is good. Everyone plays it for a while. Then a while later, could be a few years, could be ten, everyone comes back and goes "Uh the game is trash actually"

I wonder what causes this. Is it just bog standard contrarianism, or do people just get tired of the people constantly praising a game?

Some games deserve this, Spiderman 2 never should have been praised, but then I see it happening to the fucking witcher 3, which aside from having bog standard open world syndrome is one of the greatest games Ive ever played
@Kyonko802 Eternally the public consciousness is stuck on waves of contrarianism. See: the Zelda cycle, where a Zelda game at launch either gets high praise or about average results for a Zelda title, then is trashed shortly after, then later after a few years people treat it as the best in the franchise and wonder why it was considered the worst. Currently BoTW and ToTK are stuck in the "worst of the franchise" section and should some standard Zelda titles come out in the next few years for the Switch 2, people will start praising them again.

@Iffine @Kyonko802 from what I can tell, botw isn't really seen that way but TotK definitely is.
