@RustyCrab my roommate will sometimes tell me the most crazy shit you've ever heard and i'm like "where did you hear that?" and he shows me an instagram reel of some guy spouting fake statistics while holding an unrelated book.
i've been trying to beat it into him that he actually needs to look up any dubious information he sees on the internet, but i'm beginning to think he really doesn't know what "dubious" even means.
@beardalaxy @RustyCrab there’s so much fake news on the internet now sometimes I’m just tempted to stop bothering. it’s not even “dubious” shit anymore, even stuff that seems highly believable is likely to be fake.

But I think it's partly a technological issue too. A lot of the time these things are shared as screenshots instead of links or even text. So even if you want to look up the source, you can't just follow a link or right click->search text, you gotta do all the legwork yourself.
