@rosey I actually kind of want a ps5 to play my 4k blu-ray on. Unfortunately my pc is incapable of playing them because of even more DRM bullshit. I can rip them but not play them.

@beardalaxy@gameliberty.club yeah blurays on pc seems like a mess
even if you could get them to play it seems like (at least windows) doesn't have some of the proprietary hdr codecs or whatever to watch them properly anyway
it's probably all just so they have a reason to sell actual dedicated bluray players

@rosey it's not necessarily that they want to sell players, it's all DRM shit. Trying to even get the ability to rip 4k discs to begin with is a whole ordeal, but playing them is a huge process where things can go wrong at any point. You need a 4K compatible drive that can be downgraded to older firmware, an old Intel processor with integrated graphics and a motherboard that supports a specific feature of it, and an old version of the only software that can play the movies. The problem you'll run into there is that the old software version isn't getting updated, so newer movies might not work.

The DRM relies on a feature that Intel no longer supports because it had a massive security vulnerability and fixing it pulled too much performance away from the performance of the processor. Shit never worked on AMD. It's all a shit load of fuck.

I'm glad I can rip the movies still but I'm pissed that I can't just watch them. I don't want 50gb movie files taking up space on my pc and I don't want to have to rip a file every time I want to watch a movie. So I end up just watching the normal discs instead, hoping that one day I can actually use the 4k ones.
