He likes it more, sure, it's more detailed, yes, but "better" is too subjective.
The art must serve it's purpose, and the image on the right likely will not.
Images can be "messy".
When there's too much detail, and nothing draws the eye.
This effect is amplified further when the images are in motion.
This was the main complaint against some of the fight scenes in Transformers.
People couldn't understand what they're looking at.
And it wasn't just the speed.
Sonic is fast, but not confusing to look at, because the details are blurred away.
When frozen still in a single image, Sonic's spin-dash looks a bit weird, not to mention blur frames (pic related).
But in motion, it's kino.
It will take time before the AI can pull that off.
And you're right and he's being stupid. When he says the AI "looks better" all he means that it looks more realistic and detailed, he has no mind for the purpose of the style (much like the AI has no purpose in choosing a style other than to satisfy inputs). Basically, he's a bugman giving a bugman take.
