@newt i personally started with the Donut series from Andrew Price (BlenderGuru) on Youtube. CGGeek also has a begginers tutorial series for a ice cream and Grant Abbit has one where you make a nice Sci-Fi scene with a robot gorilla, but it's also absolute begginer friendly.

After that, the Chair tutorial series of BlenderGuru is also good for learning more about basic modeling itself.

Do you use anything other than a mouse and a keyboard for input?

@newt nope nothing more than that. A grapics tablet it's mandatory if you wanna go into sculpting because otherwise would be imposible with the mouse alone, but that's absolute pro territory.
