I wonder why chinese knock-off PS1 aren't a thing, like chinese NES knock-offs were once. After all it seems like a pretty popular console on the same level.

@hideki NES was based on a 6502 CPU, which is readily available and costs like $2. PS1 has a lot of custom hardware. Of course, reverse engineering all that shit and making copies was an option, but nobody wanted to make a huge investment, or didn’t succeed if they did. There were plug-and-play “consoles” that looked like PS1 though.

@Inginsub some chinese entrepeneur could have designed something a-la Raspberry PI but more simpler and with a chinese ps1 bios embedded or something like that imo.

@hideki it’s definitely possible now, but they won’t do it if they don’t see a market for this thing. There are some PS1 enthusiasts now, but most of them would prefer an original console over a knock-off. If something like RPi had existed in the nineties, the market would probably have been flooded with PS1 knock-offs.
