@matrix patents expired. Same goes for MPEG-2 Visual except for Philippines and Malaysia (by MPEG LA's own admission) â but who cares since advantages of MPEG-2 on low bitrate videos are next to inconsequential.

@matrix hell, I'd argue that increased complexity of compression in MPEG-2 Visual can result on worse picture on lower-to-mid bitrates due to more egregious artifacts. It should look much better at high bitrates though.
