@matrix i think the tendency is that people (and by people i mean amerikkkans) want some protection from local establishment, i.e. mastodon users expecting instance admins/moderators block others instead of blocking others themselves, online games to ban naughty players preemptively instead of muting and reporting, etc.

It's simpler than that. Someone cannot win an argument, so the ultimate appeal to authority is getting someone deplatformed.

Even if you gotta dig for content from years ago to win an argument today.
