lay off the pleroma devs please

wow there is a big political rift between pleroma and mastodon, hey

mastodon has basically become synonymous with activitypub, because mastodon controls 80% of the use of activitypub

mastodon's development team (which i assume is one person) is more or less deciding the future of how activitypub will move forward

pleroma is virtually the other 20%

when pleroma decides to do something else, or do something differently, it makes it difficult to fit in with mastodon

some people see this different and unbalanced process of negotiating political differences as a matter of one side is right, and one side is wrong.

personally, i am ready to show my colours/factional allegiance now - i am in the pleroma camp.

from my limited understanding, the main issue that causes a lot of anger is how to make the fediverse safe and private. mastodon opts to organise users into subsets of instances with admins and moderators who decide for their users what other instances they will be connected to

pleroma does not do this. pleroma requires the individual user to decide for themselves who they will and will not be connected to

many people in the mastodon faction claim that pleroma is compromising the method of safety that mastodon practices because pleroma does not block instances in the same way as mastodon

however a lot of people get angry and worked up without actually understanding how the underlying protocol, activitypub works.

the issue about how to exclude people who are nazis etc using pleroma/mastodon cannot actually be solved at the level of blocking instances

it requires us to understand or change the way activitypub works
