@karen i found such plug here, so weird. i thought coaxial was a thing for old corporate networks.
@pony @karen as far as I understand "cable tv" is just regular collective TV antenna, this is a coaxial internet, there was some obscure (to me at least) technology somewhere between ADSL and whatever the fuck until people realized it's better to just put ethernet into the flat instead of weird shit
@hj @karen it's just a cable you would use for hf signal over longer distance, there is nothing too magical about it...
@pony @karen magical is to me that i never actually saw it. Like up until 2005 or something, basically four to five cables enter the apartment in russia - power, phone, radio, tv anntena, sometimes intercom. We've had dialup internet and ADSL, and after that another cable was added and it was just ethernet, never a coaxial or anything like it.

And i know it's probably not a "cable TV" because there's already a TV cable connected and it uses slightly different connector
@hj @karen there is a slight frequency difference, ADSL squeezes into whatever you can get over the plain phone cable and the distance, so relatively low freq and low speeds unless you're really close to the dslam (and dslam is well connected)

TV needs higher freqs into vhf/uhf range, it needs a proper coaxial cable, so a cable TV is much better off when they want to add internet

Coaxial cable is just a better cable, nothing else, it let's you do high frequency signal over longer distance (unless you get a fiber, ofc)

@pony @hj @karen Most internet over phonelines got switched to VDSL2, which can be quite fast if you are really close to the DSLAM.

@pony @hj @karen Mine went from 8Mbit ADSL to 20Mbit VDSL than 50Mbit VDSL2

@matrix @hj @karen that's still not that amazing compared to 300 the cable guys have...
