@coolboymew @millysoose It's probably the fact that most single user instances have been pleroma so people think it's easier to make a pleroma instance.

Other way of looking at that is that it is more scalable. As far as I know you can't divide Pleroma itself between different machines.

Yet. There are no large instances to test that, but that's probably better. Fediverse consisting of many smaller instances works better than one consisting of few big ones.
