@Prodigal @matrix I just saw it while I was looking into the name. Nice. 
Turns out that it is from the city of Shanghai. Why the Chinese wrote it separately, I don't know. I did an introductory course of Chinese years ago, but have forgotten everything but the pictogram for horse (马, yes, it was Simplified Chinese); but if you understand more of it, maybe you can find out about the naming conundrum.
