@matrix @Haibaner you know what other things were "fads" and are now accepted as 100% cromulent english? words like "selfie" which you don't question for a second now, but was labelled a fad when it emerged

we used to have more second-person pronouns. thee/thou/thy - nobody uses them anymore. is you/your that a fad? no, it's just how things work. workds can change

@FloatingGhost @Haibaner Words need to represent real things and concepts.
Selfie is pretty clear cut and developed naturally. thee/thou/thy are just forms of you and describe a relation between an individual and an object. you/your is also pretty clear cut as it is used to differentiate between me and everyone else. I wouldn't be surprised if some animals had me/mine and you/your.
“ze/zir” or “ey/em/eirs” mean nothing. They don't represent anything in the real world or relations between things. They are just an ego boost, a new dress.

@matrix @Haibaner i think you have a pretty backwards conception of how language works - words mean nothing intrinsically. "you" on its own means absolutely nothing. it's a set of squiggles. we have however agreed that "you" refers to one (or many) people secondary to the speaker, and "her" is the objective case of a word referring to someone (or something, since boats are called her, hence there's no biological link) based on another set of agreed criteria

there are people who have agreed that "ze" is the objective case of a word referring to someone based on another set of criteria
@FloatingGhost @matrix
I'd be completely fine with some people agreeing that some word means something as long as they won't force me to accept it and call me an offender for not using their made-up word
but apparently that's what's happening nowadays
@Haibaner @matrix is anyone coming to force you? is there someone sat next to you making you use those words? no, of course there isn't.
you can't force linguistic change. you can try, but it won't work particuarly well. these people are offering new words that they'd like people to adopt to refer to them. whether that will work or not cannot be answered until it either disappears or enters common parlance
@FloatingGhost @matrix
nobody forces me to but apparently people have a 'pronouns' section in their bio and will rant at me for not following it

@FloatingGhost @Haibaner Yes, words are what ever we agree, but they have absolutely no use if they don't describe something tangible and when even people who use them don't really know what they're outside of "welp, they are pronouns".
What purpose do they serve that he/she/they don't cover?

@matrix @FloatingGhost
to show the individuality of a person duh
how about we use ipv6 addresses as pronouns? will probably make the same sense
@matrix @Haibaner what purpose does "he" cover that "she" doesn't? or vice versa? why are vehicles and... guns for some reason covered by "she" when they'd be adequately covered by "it"?

is there any reason we couldn't use "he" for everyone? nope, not a single reason. language doesn't have to be logical or have one unique way of addressing each particular requirement
@FloatingGhost @matrix
because that's what the tradition is - to call ships or whatever else she
that originated from the fact that they're usually operated by the male crews
and new pronouns are exactly what the tradition is not
@Haibaner @matrix so you're basically agreeing that the usage is entirely arbitrary and based on nothing more than "well that's how we've always done it"

which implies that there should be nothing wrong with using new ones, if there was no reasoning behind the usage of the current ones

@FloatingGhost @Haibaner Humans tend to personalize things to which they develop emotional connections. That's why they give them human pronouns.

I see budge, flat chest, smaller hips = he
I see tits, wider hips = she
I don't know = they -> ask if he or she
Tangible things that give me useful information. What information does ze convey?

@matrix @Haibaner maybe you should ask someone that uses it
i don't know people that actually use the pronoun, and it hasn't spread to my lexicon yet, so i can't answer

@FloatingGhost @Haibaner This page essentially says that it means whatever.
"person who goes by "ze" could actually be a man, a woman, both, neither, or something else entirely"
mypronouns.org/ze-hir

@matrix @FloatingGhost @Haibaner Honestly the singular they has been something these types have been gravitating towards and it's a hell of a lot more natural than stuff like xe and might actually stick.
@ArdanianRight @matrix @Haibaner i agree with this. singular they has been around for ages and is relatively widely accepted
@Haibaner @ArdanianRight @matrix no? you seem to have contention with the entire idea of different words existing in the first place
singular they is further down the acceptance pipeline and is more likely to stick in common parlance. for every one word that actually sticks there are loads of others that don't - you're just getting to see the selection process this time around
@Haibaner @ArdanianRight @matrix my entire point has been that other pronouns *can* exist, singular they is just closer to common parlance than any other new one
@FloatingGhost @ArdanianRight @matrix
then why 'invent' a new pronoun if you can just use 'they'? or be like everyone else and use the biological fucking gender? I don't see the point dude
@Haibaner @ArdanianRight @matrix why "invent" singular they? why "invent" 'she'? why do anything? why speak at all? people wanted a word for a specific use-case. so one was found.

(and "biological gender" is an oxymoron but whatever)
@FloatingGhost @ArdanianRight @matrix
so you're saying that it's an oxymoron but you called me edgy when I said that there are only two genders? yeah I see.

you're going to extremes dude. why exist at all, yeah yeah yeah dude. yeah. yeah.
@matrix @FloatingGhost @Haibaner Words don't "need" to represent "real" things -- or even concepts (although I would argue that "ze/zir" can represent a concept as well as any other third person pronoun).
Words can also represent attitudes and moral judgements for instance, without referencing objects in the real world ("the king of france" anyone?)
