So the computer graphics course at my uni is teaching us legacy OpenGL using Java. For those of you who know what that means, I'll give you a minute to calm down, please redirect your white-hot rage elsewhere.

We have coursework for the thing and the specification's rather open, in fact it doesn't actually specify what version of OpenGL or even what language we have to use.

So basically, my plan is to use modern OpenGL and C++ to complete the coursework and doubtlessly piss off the poor soul who has to mark it. I already taught myself modern GL over a year ago and I refuse to invest time learning something outdated in a bullshit language that I'm not going to use if I can avoid it.

I'll post progress on here because I'm fucking bored and if I have to suffer, y'all gotta do it with me.

So the specification states that we have to make a simple interactive 3D scene themed around one of the following: {nature, farm, climate change} I feel nature's quite open and there ain't enough bluepills in the world to get me to render Greta Thunberg's face so I'll go for that.

Really want to try my hand at rendering water for once and I think this is a good excuse to do that. I found some animu looking pics related online that look AESTHETICC AF and I'm using them for inspiration. I like the first two with the bridges and I want to something inbetween the two.

For the interactive part, changing the time of day would be relatively easy and if I have time, I might even include some rudimentary fishing game.

Considering a dynamic water texture using a 3D voronoi pattern (pic related). My lecturer's going to fucking hate me by the end of this...

I’m starting to run into some serious performance issues with this thing. If I can’t run this on a 1050, what hope do my lecturers have running it on an integrated card? I need to change what I’m going for here…

Deadline for this thing got pushed back AGAIN so now have more time to think about how I’m going to get this thing running…

Okay, uuh this thing’s due in like three days. I need to get moving. Here’s a sneak peak at the new thing I’m going for along with a more versatile renderer…

I think I’m gonna call that finished! Now all I gotta do is write up a report and document some code. To summarize the features of this thing: we have transparency and translucency, camera movement, specular highlights, alpha maps, time of day simulated by dynamic lighting, a swimming fish and the lily pads even bob up and down! Only things I’d say I’m really missing are shadows and normal maps, but fuck shadows and normal maps, they’re effort and this thing is due in tomorrow. Thank you for putting up with me spamming your TL with screenshots and animu. This has been my TED Talk.

I’ll post an update if and when this thing gets marked, because I bet my lecturer’s going to want a word with me. I showed up to like one of his classes this term then I’m throwing this bullshit at him.

I’m still in awe at the fact that this thing is only using up like 12% of my GPU considering what I had before.

Alright, everything’s submitted, here’s hoping I don’t get slapped with a 0 for not using J*va

Update on the coursework, I got 95%! Guess he liked it :welldone:

(IDK if y’all still care, I’m just going by prior engagement on the thread)
