I mean, sure, many prior social arrangements were less alienating....but the level of toil required for bare subsistence, the rates of death from infectious disease, etc are demonstrably worse than the average life under modern capitalism

@matrix that's true, and some of the critiques of capitalism aren't necessarily about poverty but about dehumanization

I know, but I don't really see a way out of it, I think that it's a trade off. You can't have a high living standard and the sense of kinship and humanity that most likely tribal societies had.
