@matrix the british actually started the "strategic bombing" of cities in a bid to get the germans to retaliate in kind because prior the germans were targeting RAF bases exclusively and the british were quickly losing their ability to defend themselves. british actually desired the bombing of civilian targets over military targets and duped the germans into retaliatory responses via the bombing of german cities. had the germans not stupidly played into that they might've very well annihilated almost all british airfields making it a lot more difficult for the strategic bombing of europe to grow in magnitude.
