You are in the US so you might be able to get some used server for as low $100 dollars off Ebay.
@matrix i can look but i anticipate the specs not quite meeting my needs. could be a good starting point where i can just upgrade specific parts though

@matrix yeah this is a lot lower spec than i feel comfortable with, also probably not the best for upgrading... but i'll definitely keep this for reference in case i can use it for something, and i'll look around on ebay. i know ebay's search system lets you filter by certain specifications so that's nice
@matrix more i think about this, it might be a good router setup with an appropriate network card
