the old soviet clone computers were actually fairly impressive for the time. despite being low on funding, equipment and personnel their engineers pulled off some incredible designs like a small, fanless 4MHz PDP-11 clone in a keyboard form factor in 1984.

some Intel chips are made in the US still. i know for sure that IBM POWER chips for the longest time were made in new york and they might still be making them in the US.

they might. i know they used to make M68000 chips for some of their calculators in the US and those got used in embedded boards. assembly for that architecture is really pleasant to work with by the way. super straightforward and easy to get into

i’m tempted to build my own RISC-V shitbox if i can find affordable chips with docs that aren’t a chinky clusterfuck now that i have an uncle bubba tier reflow station and i can work with BGA packages. i’ve seen people do RV32 implementations on breadboards
