Looking at family photos from just a few years ago is a great showcase of how cameras have developed. Our first Canon Powershot A530 had quite issues with not perfectly lit scenes and in those produced a flat noisy image. In well lit scenes it performed quite well.
Our next camera Samsung WB650 performed much better and poorly lit pictures no longer looked flat however still had a lot of noise.
When we started using mainly smartphones around 2015, the quality dropped quite massively with less detail, more noise in low light scenarios and often blurry. Now with newer 2019-2020 smartphones, it's much much better, but often not better than the Samsung digital camera and sometimes the post-processing completely shits the bed and turns the picture into an oil painting.
I think it's still worth it to buy a digital camera.
@matrix it absolutely is

I'd say it depends on how many photos you take.
I don't own a DSLR, but my nicest camera flies.
