I'm thinking of buying refurbished server for Matrix and Peertube however all of those that would make financial sense have Ivy Bridge or older Xeons so it would mean lower single threaded performance than my rented dedi with an i7-3370

Considering how much storage costs I don't think it's worth it

@matrix you’re going to buy an entire server?

@kino Something with enough cores and drive spaces would be like $300 and that's without drives and a RAM upgrade.

@kino But you add drives, more RAM, rails and it's already over $1000 :feelsbadman:

@matrix plus you have to take into consideration the power requirements and the monthly increase to your utility bill + probably the need for business or commercial level internet plans

@kino Or collocation and holy crap I originally didn't look at how much has the exchange rate dropped. I just realized I pay only few € more for renting than I would for collocating.

@matrix
I have three PowerEdge 1950s, anybody who can either come get one or handle shipping can have one. Has iDRAC enterprise licensing.

@r000t Thanks but shipping a server across the ocean costs a fortune.

@matrix Is i7 3370 a typo? 3xxx series is Ivybridge.
@matrix Currently the main reason to own your own server hardware is so you can own your own storage hardware because renting storage is fucking expensive.

@rude Not really. Fran :franciscointensifies: has 1TB of SSD cached RAID10 for $5/month.
