@matrix not pictured: at the side of the road because you didn't buy a premium mileage package this month and can only drive 20 miles a day

@matrix@gameliberty.club I don't understand why BMW suddenly gets the blame for this like Tesla didn't start doing this back in 2010 already.

@SuperDicq @matrix and then you got all the youtube shills claiming tesla is the best car ever :kirby_angery:

GNU/car

Buying a car without proprietary software is easy, just drive almost any shitbox that's from the early 2000s or earlier.

You're not gonna find a modern car that doesn't have bullshit. Every car has an "infotainment" system now.

@getimiskon@udongein.xyz @NeonPurpleStar@outerheaven.club @matrix@gameliberty.club Be careful with ECUs tho. Some car brands require a proprietary protocol to speak to reprogram the ECU even from the early 00s, all Japanese car brands are safe however.

@SuperDicq @matrix @NeonPurpleStar it's not an actual problem for me. I can't even drive anything else than a bicycle, lol.

@getimiskon@udongein.xyz @NeonPurpleStar@outerheaven.club @matrix@gameliberty.club Also almost all ECUs are replaceable with aftermarket ones such as Speeduino or Megasquirt.

But if you really want to be safe and not mess with electronics at all go buy a car with a carb. Pure mechanical, no computers.

To be honest, I think the biggest issue is when there's connectivity to the internet.
@SuperDicq @matrix @NeonPurpleStar @getimiskon 90s cassette radio also runs on some form of programmable controller, same for EFI cars with a cat
@SuperDicq @matrix @NeonPurpleStar @getimiskon >Anti-Theft DRM
>potentially no fixing ECU issues without reverse engineering diagnostics protocols
no
@SuperDicq @matrix @NeonPurpleStar @getimiskon the radio is literally vendor locked, just because hardly anybody cares about fm radio and cassettes these days it doesn't mean that the DRM mindset isn't common in the auto industry since the first time electronics became powerful enough to support it

a 90s car is about as free as BASIC software of the same era
@SuperDicq @matrix @NeonPurpleStar @getimiskon you can put in a different head unit which will obviously no longer have theft protection

but the old head unit is not transferable, if you want to restore a 90s car you won't be able to fix a broken head unit by simply replacing it with one from the scrap yard
@SuperDicq @NeonPurpleStar @getimiskon @matrix *replace it with an OEM unit, unless maybe you replace the ECU or some other module as well

@ic3l9@post.ebin.club @matrix@gameliberty.club @NeonPurpleStar@outerheaven.club @getimiskon@udongein.xyz Ah yeah I do remember theft protection being a thing on some radios. I guess that is indeed a form of vendor lock-in since you can't transfer that radio into another car easily.

If you have an aftermarket radio this is no issue tho. I always put aftermarket radios in my cars.

@SuperDicq @matrix @NeonPurpleStar @getimiskon yeah it's certainly much less of a problem the e.g. tesla's big screen infotainment thing

@ic3l9@post.ebin.club @matrix@gameliberty.club @NeonPurpleStar@outerheaven.club @getimiskon@udongein.xyz Yeah especially since cars 20 year old cars that are still rocking the OEM head unit are very rare. Everyone has replaced them by now.

@SuperDicq @matrix @NeonPurpleStar @getimiskon i haven't... i'm considering it regularly but i don't listen to anything except the car while driving so it would be a waste of money

@ic3l9@post.ebin.club @matrix@gameliberty.club @NeonPurpleStar@outerheaven.club @getimiskon@udongein.xyz Yeah you can also just take out the head unit and cover up the whole with a neat looking blanking plate and enjoy your weight reduction.

@SuperDicq @matrix @NeonPurpleStar @getimiskon i'm not sure you have to have one, it might also depend on model year and whatnot

in germany you're asked to tune in to a specific frequency when entering long tunnels, where they inform you about emergencies and what measures to take

it might just be a recommendation but i heard about people with post 2001 vehicles that got defects for not having the plastic strap that attaches the fuel cap to the vehicle, since thats's an emissions-critical part
