But that’s beside the point. I own my server, and you don’t. Therefore, I decide who and what my server operates with—not you.

As for whether or not popularity impacts who I interact with. Not really—but network effect certainly does.

My family is likely to join Threads. They’re not so likely to join QQ. Despite QQ being more popular than Threads, federating with Threads has a bigger impact on me due to its network effect on my life

What some extremists fail to realize is that talking to my mother is more important to me than talking to some random dude from mas.to. Sorry, but I’m not sorry. To me, my mother takes precedence.

But beyond that, people I know realize that I’ve been working on decentralized social media for years. All this time, I’ve pushed for them to leave Meta’s services. Mostly they haven’t done it. Them seeing that it’s possible to interact with me while they use Threads—and I don’t—is a big step towards them realizing that decentralized social media is not just real but practical.

I have priorities. When it comes to social interactions, family and friends come first. Sure, I have left Facebook and Instagram, but if there’s an opportunity to communicate with those services without using them, I will take it.

Here’s what irks me. A lot of these Mastodon extremists, the ones up in arms about atomicpoet.org potentially federating with Threads—I know they have accounts on Facebook and Instagram.

Meanwhile, I deleted my Facebook and Instagram accounts long, long ago and haven’t been back there since.

From my standpoint, Meta is compromising with me—I’m not compromising with them. They’re coming here, I’m not going back there. I own my social media life, not them.

I don’t judge people who continue to use Facebook, WhatsApp, or Instagram. How dare I tell them to give up their support networks based on my moral qualms with those services. These support networks are often a matter of life and death too.

Quite frankly, by discontinuing my Meta accounts, I gave up my support network. All of it, in fact. If I die, the majority of my family probably won’t be informed for quite awhile—unless my wife posts something about it on Facebook.

So yeah, count me pleased that I might get some of my support network back. Even though I don’t like Meta, I’ll be happy to talk to people who continue to use their services even though I wish they wouldn’t.

I judge them if they keep bitching about all of the negatives of those platforms yet remain on them.
