I had started dipping my toes in Linux using live cds for data backup at work. Then I moved a spare system to Linux. After tinkering with that for a bit I was able to switch my main system to Linux and never look back. Thatw as in 2015.
I think the biggest thing people should do is start switching to FOSS options for their programs that way switching to Linux will make them have to get used to less new programs. If you're deep in the Windows or Apple only apps then you're in for a bigger shock when you find few of them are available on Linux.

The "shock" (surprise) applied when I tried using an iPhone instead of Android. The same experience is applied to those learning Windows for the first time, coming from Apple. Naturally, it is no different when coming to Linux.
But that is why I think people should switch to Linux, slowly, as they adjust and adapt, as they would any other system. That way, you can experience things gradually and not just be "surprised".
