What will it take for the #Fediverse to kill #Twitter?
@realcaseyrollins
Do people use Twitter socially anymore? I don't think so, not on the scale they used to anyway.
@Coomer I'm not sure that we're seeing droves of users leave #Twitter and join the #Fediverse AND stay active consistently tho. Are we?
@realcaseyrollins
No, they've mostly gone to other proprietary sites. A mainstream site is going to have to adopt ActivityPub for Fedi to get really mainstream (which Jack actually has talked about as a possibility before with Twitter)
@Coomer Yeah but what's the point if half the #fediverse blocks it
@Coomer I only compared the two because #Gab had so many users compared to the #fediverse at large (they had at least a million users at the time IIRC), so it has sort of a similar case of a (relatively) big social networking site just popping into the #Fediverse and flooding it with new users. The scale is certainly different but some reactions to it should provide at least some precident.
@realcaseyrollins The problem with the #fediverse is far too many instances are run by petty minded silly admins inflating their own self importance far too much. You are right, if twitter joined the fediverse tomorrow 70% of the tiny small fediverse instances (couple of thousand users, if that?) would have a colossal hissy fit.
Example - Oh but twitter is so mainstream, plus they don't code, and we do, blah, blah, let's block them all. Their silly mastodon heads stuck up their own arseholes. That's how the fediverse really functions and that's why it will always lack real growth as a social platform. The fediverse is it's own worse enemy.

@realcaseyrollins
They're already moving to an open standard, probably to mitigate hosting costs while increasing reach. Twitter's also a lot different than Gab, the scale and type of users are incomparable. I don't think any instance would defederate from them, the opposite is more likely, they defederate from our corner of Fedi.
