@realcaseyrollins @foxhkron @cyber_ruffy at first they broke federation because they removed some essential endpoints, and pleroma didn't work without them after 48 hours, but mastodon did, so it seemed like only pleroma federation broke. in reality, all federation of new accounts broke. They then decided to quit federation because they don't like AP and it's to expensive to them (their words)
@lain @realcaseyrollins @cyber_ruffy @foxhkron
>AP is too expensive
is this true? I'd imagine that a centralized store would be cheaper
@fluffy @cyber_ruffy @foxhkron @realcaseyrollins well, not federating is less taxing than federating, but it's really not too much. you can run pleroma on the smalles vps on hetzner. they also said that federation only brings in 'lispy queer pink shit', so i suspect that the decision is not purely technical.
@lain @cyber_ruffy @foxhkron @realcaseyrollins sure. I mean about AP not pleroma. Wouldn't a proprietary format be lighter and thus less expensive?

For guys who are concerned about costs they sure do spend a lot of money on engineering stuff over and over again
@fluffy @cyber_ruffy @foxhkron @realcaseyrollins you could make a lighter format, surely, but there's not much point, the data you need to send is somewhat verbose but compresses very well. it's not worse than xmpp, and nobody says that is too slow.
@lain @cyber_ruffy @foxhkron @realcaseyrollins in any case, it's pretty clear they weren't benefitting from federating with us. I would have made the same decision on his end, having seen the "welcoming" other mastodon instances gave them.

I bet Torba was advised by someone that fedi would have welcomed him with open arms as a fellow rebel against big tech. I wonder if the same guy advised america that iraqis would welcome them as fellow lovers of freedom.

@fluffy @cyber_ruffy @lain @foxhkron Yeah, the problem was Rob Colbert basically rewrote , deployed the new software without testing it, and realized the Federation code was super broken. So he decided not to fix it it, and get rid of the feature altogether.

@cyber_ruffy @fluffy @lain @foxhkron I'm not aware of this, I just knew that they rewrote it a few weeks ago, didn't test it, and then they got plagued with these issues

It was awful at first, man, people couldn't even post pictures
