You sure about this? I think it's in dispute, nobody really knows why they did it.

They were trying to leech users. That's the end of it. They didn't understand fedi, they didn't know how monetization-resistant we are, they thought "bigger instance is better", plus their platform was aging and having Masto as an upstream gave them a new platform for free.
