An idea: Since in our current society you legally become an independent adult at 18, every person gets to choose their own name when 18, for free

Like, you'd just receive a form from the gov't letting you choose whether to keep your given name, or if not, choose your own

@realcaseyrollins Because it'd make many trans people's lives easier, and besides, there's bound to be plenty of cis people who dislike their given names, so why not give everyone the chance to decide what they want to be called without going through all the fees and troubles associated with changing your legal name later in life

@SigmaOne I agree with this but why should the government be giving the forms preemptively? It should be like drinking, you can use alcohol when you hit the certain age, but they don't send you a bottle when you hit 21. It would also be a waste of resources to send forms to people who want to keep their name.

The principle is nice tho, I like it. It might cost taxpayers slightly more money, but it shouldn't be too bad.

@realcaseyrollins It could also be opt-in, like, you ask for the form yourself. My main idea is that for the first time, the government would handle all the paperwork and such as the process can be quite convoluted, which I know puts many people off enough to not go through with it

Of course, making the process, well, not convoluted in the first place would probably be better, but I feel like that'd be quite difficult to achieve
