but its got a lot of work to be done before it could replace both.

but if it could also replace email as well that would be interesting. at least i think it would be.

Evan created a federated Twitter replacement in 2008. I created a Facebook replacement in 2010. And they work OK together as evidenced by the fact that here we are today using the same fediverse and talking to each other.

They could work a bit better together, but this requires people thinking about an integrated culture and how to achieve that. Some like to point out the differences and create arguments as to why they should be separate.

Technically we could go either way. The software and protocols exist right now to do either or both. Just like we see in many cultural divides, it's all a matter of what kind of fediverse people decide to live in.
