@realcaseyrollins @lain Yes, and I think that's a good thing. But they are spending resources to create something that already exists, which I think is a bad thing if they are only doing it so they can slap their name on it.
If they actually make a protocol with technological advantages over ActivityPub, that would be fantastic. I'm not sure they will do enough to warrant avoiding the existing millions of people and dozens of applications that already implement ActivityPub though.
The goal of bluesky (as I understand it, I admittedly have done nothing more than skim the announcement linked in the article) is to "invent" a decentralized protocol for social media. ActivityPub already is this, but Dorsey can't get credit for inventing ActivityPub, so they want to reinvent it. Hence, NIH syndrome.
