@comradeagle We have a so-called 'smart' TV here. It doesn't have a cam or mic, but the spyware has to be disabled on initial setup else it can't be turned off. I was dreading it but it turned out rather tame; guess Sharp aren't into it much either.

@thatbrickster @comradeagle I think there are alternative OSes you can install.
@thatbrickster @comradeagle Ubuntu used to have a variant for Smart-TVs and home theater PCs called Mythbuntu. There is also LinuxMCE which is designed for home-theater PCs, but there is probably a way to get it working on Smart TVs.
@xianc78 I remember Mythbuntu. It sounds like you're taking the viewpoint of an external computer making TVs 'smart'. If not, this assumes you can overwrite the internal memory to boot an alternative OS. I haven't heard of any cases where you can.

@thatbrickster @comradeagle Well given that you can install alternative OSes on Android phones I assume that it is possible to do so on Smart-TVs. Otherwise, your best bet is to wait for some company like Purism to make an open-source Smart-TV that let's you install any compatible OS.
@xianc78 I'd say it's possible (they're computers after all) but right now there isn't a focus on jailbreaking TVs. The best way is to get a jailbroken Amazon Fire stick or something along those lines, not exactly a workaround.
