My first experience with a super-hyped game experiencing numerous delays was Zelda: Ocarina of Time, so for many years I actually thought of game delays as a somewhat good thing, as a game being repeatedly improved and polished due to the developers getting extra time to perfect the game.

Much later I realized that huge delays are often a sign that something has gone badly wrong during the game development process, and in the case of PC games and games having to make a console generational leap due to the delays, just catching up to modern standards on a technological level proves difficult enough. Polishing and perfecting the game? Developers often seem to struggle to merely keep the game playable after it has come to only bear a passing resemblance to the original product.

@ChristiJunior Well Ocarina had to be cut down because it went from a 64 MB magnetic disk to a 32 MB cartridge, so I think even Ocarina of Time was hindered by delays.
