I hope Square realizes how bad this makes them look, and is more generous this time around. I heard Sakurai had a harder time getting Cloud back for Ultimate than getting Snake to return, so Konami's basically way more chill than Square, which is really saying something.
Hell, Square didn't even give us any FF7 Spirits in Ultimate, which is just plain dickish.

@rasterman Not necessarily a problem with Nintendo nowadays - they USED to have a problem with them, refusing to give Nintendo even ports of mainline Final Fantasy games long after Nintendo dumped the cartridge format and went with optical discs. In recent years they've been cool with Nintendo tho.
I think Square might be a bit overprotective of their flagship IP, like Nintendo is, and they also like to sell Final Fantasy music, so Smash giving it away might not sit right with them. Not at least allowing Final Fantasy Spirits is still fucking retarded.

They even briefly ditched Nintendo's handhelds, porting their classic Final Fantasy games to the WonderSwan instead of the GameBoy Color/Advanced only to move back to the GameBoy after it was clear that the WS would not be released overseas. Apparently, Square also had a problem with Nintendo's censorship and strict licensing policies. The cartridge format was just the final nail in the coffin.
