@takao @feld Love this game and the "layers of hell"

Just labyrinthine enough to not actually need to map out anything except for the last batch of dungeons
@coolboymew @feld using a front layer to shit up the screen and deliberately confuse your recollection of the layout is such a great idea~ Though it's easily defeated with pen and paper, jotting down short direction notes.
It plays well into shaping your grinding habits and forcing the „explore a bit and escapipe later, rinse and repeat” flow too.
@takao @feld Oh no, it doesn't actually refers to the front layer thing

But it refers to most dungeons needing you to drop through the correct hole to advance, thus "layers of hell" because you need to climb and go down the correct hole constantly

@coolboymew @feld @takao If you think that's bad, try the pseudo-3D dungeons in the first game.

@xianc78 @feld @takao yup, finished it legit. I had to make maps, because after the second dungeon, if you don't make map, you're toast, because of the traps that makes you drop a floor

@coolboymew @feld @takao I had to play the first one with a walkthrough because of the bullshit 3D dungeons. I didn't have the patience to create maps. Not to mention the horrible enemy encounter rate in that game. But PSI is probably the only 8-bit RPG I truly liked. PSII was too slow and clunky for me and PSIV is probably my favorite JRPG of all time (never played PSIII).

@xianc78 @coolboymew @feld PSIII is not truly bad but it's hard to get used to since it sticks out so much (in negative way). Story spanning generations is certainly extremely ambitious for a 1990 game but gameplay is clunky, player direction (and flow in general) is poor and environments are bland.

@takao @feld @coolboymew I have listened to the OST of that game. I think it potentially has the best music of the original series, but the horrible soundfont is a huge deal breaker.

@xianc78 @takao @feld I don't know, I don't remember PSIII having really good music

PSIII has a lot of problem, it wasn't made by the same staff. Go look for maps of the towns and it's rather disgusting, everything is more or less copypasted with an extremely limited tileset

There's also that gross music that plays at every encounter until you do a move
